Phil Boatwright was born in Dallas, Texas in 1962, growing up in Mesquite where he spent all his time drawing and creating things, and to this day always studying and trying to improve his art. He remembers talking his grandfather into buying him the new big box of 64 Crayola Crayons with the sharpener in the back so that he could improve his color and coloring skills when he was five years old. He started oil painting when he was 13 and studied with the western artist, Bryce Greene , when he was in high school before attending East Texas State University where he majored in illustration with a minor in fine art. He had a successful illustration career for 13 years working for such clients as Pepsi, Fossil Watches, American Airlines, National Geographic, Esquire, and Arizona Highways, among many others. These works earned numerous awards along the way from the Society of Illustrators in New York, Communication Arts Magazine, and “Best of Show”, Gold, and Silver medals from the Dallas and Houston Societies of Illustrators. Many of his illustrations over the years were portraits of people, which lead to a new career path in portrait painting, which he has been pursuing full time since 1999. Though he has a one to two-year wait list, Phil still takes time to paint for himself the subjects he loves most, nature and wildlife, while always studying and learning from the masters of the past including Rembrandt, Velasquez, Sargent, and Andrew Wyeth.
