Robert T. Barrett

In addition to being an accomplished painter, muralist, and illustrator, Robert Barrett is also a professor in the Department of Design at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He has exhibited his work in many art shows including those at the Society of Illustrators in New York, the Directors Guild of America, N.Y., the National Arts Club, N. Y. and the Salmagundi Club, N.Y. His work has also been exhibited at Society of Illustrator’s Los Angeles exhibitions, LA, Annual Utah Illustrator’s Exhibitions, the Annual Springville Salons and exhibits at the Salt Lake Art Center, SLC. He has had a number of one-man shows including those at the Society of Illustrators (NY), Springville Art Museum, the St. George Art Museum, the Kimball Art Center, Repartee Gallery, College of Eastern Utah, Brigham Young University, BYU-Idaho, and the Busam Gallerie in Berlin Germany.

Robert studied painting in Europe as the recipient of a German Academic Exchange Grant and was an Artist in Residence at the Kimball Art Center as the recipient of a joint grant from The National Endowment for the Arts and the Utah Arts Council. He has received multiple awards for his work both locally and nationally. His work has been featured in International Artists Magazine, Southwest Art, Artist’s Magazine, and American Artist magazines. He has also had work published in Society of Illustrator’s Annuals, and Print Magazine. Five of his illustrations were selected to appear in the 2014 Communication Arts Illustrator’s Annual.

Robert’s book “Life Drawing: How to Portray the Figure with Accuracy and Expression” published by North Light Books is available in five different languages and is currently used as a text at several colleges, universities, and art schools.

Robert’s clientele includes Houghton Mifflin Hartcourt, Viking USA – with their imprints Puffin, Penguin, and Dial Books, Random House, McGraw Hill, Fawcett Books, Harper Collins, Clarion Books, Bantam, Double Day, Dell Publications, Thomas Nelson, Ideals Publishing, Concordia, Marshall Cavendish Publishers, Sterling Children’s Books, and Deseret Book. In addition, his work has been published in Outdoor Life, National Geographic, American History, Boy’s Life, American Legion, and McCall’s Magazines. Robert has completed limited edition collectors’ plates for the Bradford Exchange in Chicago as well as limited edition prints for Millpond Press in Florida. He more recently completed a children’s book on the Berlin Candy Bomber entitled Christmas from Heaven. Robert has completed multiple portrait commissions and his work is included in a number of private and public collections.

Robert received a BFA in Painting from the University of Utah in 1973 and an MA and MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1975 and 1976. In 1995 he was awarded the Karl G. Maeser Award for Teaching Excellence at BYU and in 2004 he was awarded the Karl G. Maeser Research and Creative Arts Award. He was selected as the 2010 “Distinguished Educator in the Arts” by the Society of Illustrator’s in New York City and was selected in 2011 as one of the “Most Honored Living Artists of Utah” by the Springville Museum of Art.  
He was also selected in 2012 as the 2012-2014 Phi Kappa Phi Artist by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for his accomplishments in visual arts and illustration. In 2014 he was awarded a five-year University Fellowship at BYU. In 2017 he was made a Signature Member of the Portrait Society of America.

Robert is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Society of Illustrators, Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, the Pastel Society of America, and the Portrait Society of America.
