Michael Bowes is an oil painter who lives part time in Mammoth Lakes, CA, in the Eastern Sierra mountains; otherwise in Sonora, CA on the west side of Yosemite. He has lived most of his life in the Golden State and has traveled throughout its varied landscape. Michael received his BS and MS from Stanford University and had a successful career in the San Francisco Bay Area’s Silicon Valley as a designer and project manager for various high tech companies. Although he had painted for years whenever he had the chance, in 2011 he embarked full-time on a second career as an artist.
Michael has studied with a number of master painters, including Karl Dempwolf, Matt Smith, Ray Roberts, and Kathleen Dunphy . The inspiration for his art comes from an appreciation of the beauties of the natural world. Michael works mainly en plein air; painting on-site with the actual subject before the easel. His favorite subjects are the coast, foothills and High Sierra of California, the deserts of southern Arizona, and the red rock country of northern Arizona and southern Utah.
