I see each painting as part of a bigger picture- something just out of reach that comes into focus a little more with each new brushstroke, something spanning a lifetime of creating. I’m visually compelled by various forms of shape, value, pattern, etc. Through the process of painting, I gain new and deeper insight into myself and my surroundings as these elements combine and communicate. There is a beauty within the everyday and ordinary that only painting can reveal. I’m drawn to each subject in hopes of making and sharing such discoveries.
Approaching a blank sheet of watercolor paper or newly stretched canvas – I respect it for what it may become. For anyone up to the challenge the rewards can be great but always at the risk of exposure and defeat. I see evolution continue in my work as my experience builds on a growing number of successes and failures. Staying in the lines only gets you so far- as the challenge becomes more comfortable, it’s often time to take new chances. This applies not only to the technical aspect of painting but to the process of defining and revealing yourself as an artist and individual.
